Huge Island, Open Concept, Modern Farmhouse – A Project Review

We created an open concept kitchen in a tri-level home. The huge kitchen island is a multipurpose centerpiece.
This bright and beautiful home in northern Joliet is a tri-level. In the before pictures at the bottom of the page, the kitchen and dining areas were separated by a wall. Although each of the spaces were roomy on their own, we removed the wall that divided them and created a large open concept, multipurpose space.

The homeowners wanted to change the color palette from stained oak to painted cabinetry. White cabinets were added to the highest point before the ceiling angles to the peak. The perimeter cabinets are a semi custom product from Wisconsin; painted maple wood. The island is also painted maple in onyx. All counters are a light quartz. It is a classic color palette to last. The new flooring and metal balusters on the stairs update the space, while tying in wood tones throughout the home.

The island is HUGE at roughly 5’ x 9’ of workspace and 3’ x 9’ of cabinet storage. It easily accommodates four stools, and made holiday baking with grandchildren a breeze with so much workspace. The seating side of the island also has 12” deep cabinet storage the full length of it. The opposite side houses anything and everything you would ever want! The island is pure storage with drawers and cabinets with roll out shelves.

Some highlights of the design are the addition of glass with mullions in the cabinet above the microwave, and the gorgeous tile work. The white backsplash tile is called Ice White matte subway tile by CTI. The white 3” x 12” subway tile is installed as a back splash and carried to the height of the valance structure, which houses lighting, above the sink. The patterned accent tile is a ceramic 8” x 8” tile from Roca and the pattern is called Casablanca Heritage. The overall design has a solid nod to a modern farmhouse look.

As far as bells and whistles…our cabinets are always equipped with soft close doors and drawers, whether they are our Amish custom cabinetry, or any other America made line we carry. Within this kitchen, there are roll out shelves, a not-so-lazy-susan, a roll out spice cabinet adjacent to the cooking area and the best sink ever—a Blanco Silgranit sink with double bowl and a low divider.
